Butterworks Farm is for Sale!

We are selling our farm as two separate entities:

1. Our Dairy Business includes our cows, creamery equipment, field and farm equipment, sales accounts, operating systems, and brand + marketing assets.

2. Our Real Estate includes 2 farmhouses, all farm buildings, and 167 acres of farmstead, pasture, and hayfields in Westfield, Vermont.

Our ideal is to have both sold together so that our brand remains intact and our land continues to contribute to Vermont’s working landscape. If the Dairy Business is purchased independently from the Real Estate, a lease agreement will be required to operate at the current location.

Here’s your chance to own a breathtakingly-beautiful and pristinely-managed slice of organic dairy heaven

Butterworks Farm is one of the United States’ founding organic dairies and the oldest organic dairy farm and creamery in Vermont. A national leader in sustainable agriculture, Butterworks has managed a closed herd of Jersey cows since 1976, transitioning them to a 100% grass diet in 2016. Fresh mountain air, slow-aged compost, biodiverse pastures, and well-loved cows all contribute to the creamy texture and unequivocal flavor of Butterworks’ cultured dairy products.

Butterworks remains at the forefront of the cultured dairy trade, stocking coolers throughout Vermont and New England with a beloved product line of full-fat and nonfat yogurts, kefirs, buttermilk, and heavy cream.

Markets include many Vermont stores, including 10+ Hannafords; 40+ Whole Foods Markets; and four distributors serving most of the Northeast since the 1980s. Products are currently produced with limited ingredients (zero fillers/ stabilizers) in an on-farm production facility.

Well-positioned for the next phase of stewardship

The farm base sits on 167 acres of VLT conserved pasture and forest with two houses providing a great setup for team members and/or ownership to live on-site.  A large solar barn houses the herd as they roam and lounge freely in the winter; a milking barn sits right below the creamery, and a generator stands by to keep all machinery running smoothly during the rare power outage.

The bones are solid and the heart beats strong.

If you have a passion for farming and an eye for business, Butterworks Farm is a dream. In addition to the dairy operation, opportunities for agritourism, events, forest farming, education, and whatever else the creative mind can dream up are all within reach.

Cows & People

The Herd

Our herd of Jerseys is known throughout New England for the decades of strength, vigor, and calm nature that we have bred into them since the 1970s. Many former Butterworks farm hands and upstart organic farmers have started their own operations with a Butterworks cow.

Herd information: Grass-fed organic dairy herd (40 milking, 30 youngstock). This is a closed herd of Jersey cows nurtured and organically managed for over 40 years, bred to A2-A2 since 2003 and 100% grass-fed since 2016. DHIA records kept for the 30+ years.

Our easygoing cows have the luxury of spending their winters sitting atop a fluffy pile of bedding in our solar barn; no long days standing on cold cement. As they roam freely about eating homegrown hay and free choice minerals, the bed pack underneath generates a comfortable heat as it begins to compost in-place. Each spring we empty the solar barn out and arrange into long windrows to finish composting before we spread it over our hayfields and pastures.

The Staff

Butterworks is lucky to have an exceptional team of business-focused, bovine-centric, and mechanically-minded folks dedicated to the upkeep and success of the farm. While the land and business transition into new ownership, our staff continues their focus on building our accounts, fostering herd health, sequestering organic matter, and tending our equipment with care.
