Butterworks Cows

Our cows are a herd of sociable and very loveable Jerseys.

Each cow has a name and her own stall in the barn for milking time. We farm with Jerseys because of their ability to produce milk on a 100% grass diet, as well as their fun and interesting personalities and their regal beauty. High fiber and mineral rich grasses, legumes and forages are available to our cows always in the lush, rotationally grazed pastures of summer and the sweet hay of the winter solar barn.

Butterworks cows have been a closed herd since 1980, with all calves born on the farm. Each calf is named at birth following the naming theme of her mother and grandmothers (Comet from Aurora, Justine from Jacky, Dill from Mustard, Sriracha from Chipotle).

Over the years many other farms have added Butterworks cows and calves to their herds. Known as good grazers who produce milk with high nutritional components, they provide a perfect foundation for our superb line of dairy products.

Meet the Cows!

After the last rotation of pastures has been grazed late in October, the cows need a warm, dry sanctuary, where comfort can be found. Late cut dry hay, tree bark and sawdust are used to bed the cows in our solar barn 60 feet wide by 120 feet long. Fresh bedding is added twice daily providing seventy happy cows of all ages a clean and comfortable bedding pack from November to May.
